Preparation

Employment Application

The first stage in the selection process is to apply for the job. If you belong to IITs or NITs, then these big product-based companies might visit your institute for campus recruitment. But if you are thinking about off-campus recruitment, then you can directly apply to these companies through their career site, tnpofficer or get some referrals from employees working for these companies.

The preparation of a resume is the most crucial step in the application process. Candidates will be shortlisted on this basis.

Resume Selection

Candidates are shortlisted after the screening of their resumes. The key parameters here are the internships, projects, marks/grades, and technical skills. This is done to filter out the most candidates. Here are some tips candidates can look up to ensure their selection:

  • Internships will play an important role here, and a good internship will make you stand out from the crowd. By applying for some internships during college, you will get hands-on experience working in the industries. By mentioning this in your resume, you will receive positive points there.
  • Mention all the side projects you have worked on during training or your college period. This shows recruiters that you are passionate and have contributed to some open source projects.
  • Start using LinkedIn and try to make connections there. You should approach recruiters or try to get a referral from employees working for these companies because this will increase your chances for interview calls if you get some referrals. Sometimes recruiters shortlist candidates from there too.
  • Mention your coding profile in your resume. You can do this by participating in some hackathons or by taking on some coding challenges on some well-recognized online platforms. Some of these websites where you can participate or practice your coding skills are HackerRank, HackerEarth, CareerCup, CodeChef, InterviewBit, etc. 
  • A good GATE score can also help you get shortlisted by these product-based companies, so if you have a good GATE score, you can mention it on your resume as it will show recruiters that you have a strong command of your computer science field and subjects.

Now a days companies are started taking virtual interviews. The virtual round of interviews mainly consists of two tests: 

Aptitude and Logical Reasoning

This round is conducted for the students mostly to filter out the crowd and is the first round in picking up the candidates for the problem-solving and coding rounds. This round is generally MCQ-based and does not require a lot of preparation for aptitude or logical reasoning like a government exam or competitive exam preparation.

Technical Round                               

This round of Interview is very important to be placed in Product based companies. In this round of Interviews, you should focus on the data structure and algorithms part because recruiters will be asking you to solve some coding problems, and this round aims to check one’s problem-solving skills and coding ability.

They will ask you to write the code for the problems given to you, and also check the best and most optimized solution for those problems. Coding rounds can be face-to-face rounds like pen and paper rounds or whiteboard interviews. Recruiters want to check whether the candidate possesses a good command of data structures and algorithms and also understands the concept of time and space complexity.

Interviews

This is the final round of the recruitment process. Interview rounds can generally go on for 45–60 minutes on-campus and can continue for more than 60 minutes in off-campus interviews.

Interview questions will comprise both technical and non-technical questions. Generally, there can be 1 to 2 technical rounds, sometimes 3 (during off-campus). In these rounds, they first ask you about your project and internships. There is a short discussion of 10–15 minutes that may go on in this round. This is a compulsory round, and you might find yourself explaining the same things to different panelists in different rounds of the same company.

There will be questions on OOPs, SQL, DBMS, Operating Systems, Data Structures, and Computer Networks. The questions will range from basic to moderate level, and they generally expect you to answer in a maximum of one minute. 

Always try and practice your code with pen and paper too, because sometimes during the interview they ask you to write code on a piece of paper. They will usually give you 10-20 minutes to write this code.

HR Round

This round primarily aims to check your confidence level. It is a behavioral round where generally they try to put you in a hypothetical situation to check your problem-solving capability and they also try to judge you by analyzing how you work under pressure. Here, the communication skills, presentation skills, and decision-making ability of the candidate are checked.

Some companies might hold an additional group discussion round right after the aptitude round, so preparation for GD is also a must.
